Observation tower

Two outlook towers offer a wonderful overview of the open upland moor landscape in the south of Wieting moor. One of them is already part of the small hike path.

The new tower at Upland Moor Way (Hochmoorweg) in particular offers almost all through the year a good possibility of observing rare species of birds, for those who bring along a telescope, a bit of quiet and patience. From early October to mid-December, one can enjoy a special experience of witnessing the evening flight of the cranes to their nest in the moor as well as their start in the morning to the place where they get their food.

During the rest of the year different sorts of birds could be observed from here as well. For example: Waders, as well as Black-tailed Godwit and European Curlew, Bean Geese and White-fronted Geese, different kinds of ducks, Whooper Swan and Bewick`s Swan, Great Grey Shrike, Montagu`s Harrier and Hen Harrier, Short-eared owls, Eurasian Hobby etc.. With much luck, one could also see a White-tailed Eagle or Peregrine Falcon, all from a distance which leaves the birds undisturbed.

Observation tower An observation tower 12 m high offers an impressive view of south Wietingsmoor (Neustädter Moor), one of the most open and best preserved upland moor landscape belonging to northwest Germany.

Sheep farm

Since 1974 exist the sheep farm Teerling. The old tradition of sheep farming is continued in the operational factories. The farm visitors could see about 1000 countable moorland sheep, that graze on the 1500 hectare moor nature reserve, following a seasonal schedule.

The climax of the year are: the farm festival with the shearing of the moorland sheep in May, the selling of the slaughtered animals in October at the barn market in Fuhrberg, and food prepared with moorland sheep, partly contributed by the BUND of the animal park in Ströhen, ending with a tour through the sheep farm.

The sheep farm is also represented on two Saturdays in October at the market in Hannover-Fuhrberg, where meat that has been ordered in advance and different organic products (bread, vegetables, wine, herbs and so on) are sold and orders could be placed for the Christmas goose. Guidelines for organic farming are practiced on the agricultural land. The products are directly sold at the market.

In agreement with the management groups have a possibility for a tour in the moor all through the year.
